The Lake

The lake at west Wycombe is entirely man made, yet there are several springs within that in turn feed it with it's characteristic chalk filtered water, producing it's gin clear appearance.

The water is very clean and is full of nutrients, thus it is host to an enormously diverse range of wild life, including all manner of invertebrate and insects through to cootes, swans and many varieties of duck.

At one stage in the park's heyday an enormous galleon (see above) was brought over land from the Thames at Maidenhead and left floating on the water as an amusement for the guests to the park. It even had several real cannons (which may still be seen dotted around the lake).

Cannon balls were retrieved from the bottom of the lake in 1996 when the water dried up (due to drought), these apple sized balls may be seen on display in the tapestry room within the mansion house.

At night, the use of coloured spot and flood lights combined with the reflection of the water can create some spectacular results.
